One reason for this is the slow convergence rates of the numerical relaxation algorithms that are commonly used. It is shown that the convergence rates can be greatly enhanced by using multigrid methods with a conventional scalar processor but that with a vector processor the gains are much more modest. A balance must be achieved between the number of multigrid levels and the efficient use of the vector processor. These points are illustrated with the aid of two typical test problems." @default.
