First, it must equip the new generation of teachers with the knowledge and skills they will need to bring about change in the 'new' Russian school. Second, and, we would argue, more important, the network should do all that it can to maintain a supply of teachers to the nation's schools. Throughout the early 1990s, however, the Russian teacher-education system has been slow to respond to changes in socio-economic conditions, and has, far from leading school reform, managed only to trail in its wake. This article evaluates current proposals and efforts at reforming the system, and assesses their prospects for providing an answer to the needs of the Russian school." @default.
