- W2076254825 abstract "Historical and contemporary cemented total hip reconstructions have used femoral implants with design features that support contrasting philosophies on the role of bone cement. In particular, bone cement has been used to support femoral hip prostheses that incorporate a wide variety of implant metal surface finishes and textures. Laboratory data indicate that the ability of bone cement to adhere to the implant surface and to provide a stable cement-metal interface is dependent on implant surface finish. Rougher surface finish implants generally require greater force to disrupt their interface with bone cement than smoother implants. In the presence of motion at the cement-metal interface, smoother surface implants can be expected to abrade bone cement less than rougher implants. Longevity of cemented hip reconstruction may be achieved by either (1) enhancing fixation and minimizing motion at the cement-metal interface with rougher surfaced implants or (2) minimizing cement abrasion in the presence of motion at the cement-metal interface with smoother surfaced implants. One implant type may thus succeed by minimizing interface motion, whereas the other may succeed by minimizing interface abrasion." @default.
