- W2076304838 abstract "Abstract Glutathione turnover has been studied in Triatoma infestans by following the rate of incorporation of glycine-1-C 14 into the tripeptide. The levels of oxidized and reduced glutathione are very similar in nymph and male specimens. DDT consistently increases the total glutathione levels in nymphs, but in males this effect is negligible. DDE, a nontoxic DDT-analog is without appreciable effect in nymphs but decreases markedly the levels in males. Glutathione turnover is increased by DDT in nymphs while the opposite effect is observed in males. DDE markedly increases the rate of isotope incorporation into glutathione in nymphs within the first hour of intoxication, but the turnover time is apparently not modified. The above effects are interpreted as due to increased level of enzyme involved in the biosynthesis and degradation of glutathione. This is supported by the increased rate of protein synthesis as indicated by the rate of glycine-1-C 14 incorporation into proteins. These results are discussed in relation to the possible role of glutathione in detoxication." @default.
