- W2076325066 abstract "Investigations of the dependence of phonon frequencies of alkali metals and classical rare gas solids on their atomic mass, M, and nearest neighbour distance, r, reveal that they satisfy a homologous relation, Mϱν2rσ = Δ(q), a constant which depends on q, with a set of characteristic values for ϱ and σ at all wave vectors and hence the dependence of r on M could be represented by Mrη = constant, η being the rate of variation of σ with ϱ. It is shown that the atomic masses and nearest neighbour distances satisfy this relation with η = -4.75±0.40 and -8.86±0.79, respectively, in the case of alkali metals and rare gas solids, but are unrelated in the case of noble metals and transition metals. The nature and strength of the interatomic forces of the former are quite different from those of the latter. The apparent differences in the numerical values of η associated with the former, the factors which destroy the homology of the latter as well as the physical significance of the fortuitous relation between r and M which is solely responsible for the existence of homology are discussed." @default.
