- W2076586265 abstract "Spores from the sphenophyllalean cone taxa Sphenostrobus iowensis, Bowmanites dawsonii, Peltastrobus reedae, Sentistrobus goodii, and two isolated sporangial complexes believed to be sphenophyllalean, were macerated from Pennsylvanian permineralizations, and are described at the ultrastructural level. Spores of the group include both monolete and trilete forms, and range in size from 37–180 μm. All of the spores possess some form of extra-exinous wall layer (perispore). The structure of this layer, its relationship to the spore body (exospore), and the manner in which it is involved in formation of the ornamentation of the spores, differs widely. Considerable variation in suture ultrastructure is also present. All of the taxa except Sphenostrobus are ornamented by perisporial ridges which run parallel to, or at an oblique angle to the equator of the spore. The perispore in Sphenostrobus is thick and ornamented by randomly spaced pits. The trilete forms (Sphenostrobus, and Bowmanites) possess an operculate perisporial lid over the suture. The remaining forms are monolete with a perisporial ridge over the suture. They have similar perispore ultrastructure, with the exception of one type which possess hollow perisporial ridges. The fine structure of the sporoderm is compared with that of other sphenophyte spores, as well as other homosporous pteridophytes." @default.
