- W2076591480 abstract "HE SATIRE UPON Thomas Henry Huxley as Mr. Stork is far from central in The New Republic: or, Culture, Faith, and Philosophy in an English Country House, by William Hurrell Mallock (London, I877). Mallock's focus is on Matthew Arnold, Walter Pater, and Benjamin Jowett, who are gently but wittily parodied, and on John Ruskin, who is more sympathetically treated. Nevertheless, the portrait of Huxley is skillfully and, in the main, accurately drawn. As a criticism of a great Victorian by one of his most perceptive contemporaries, that portrait merits analysis, comment, and interpretation. The novel-if the account of a week-end country-house party with little plot and much conversation may properly be called a novel-was begun while Mallock was an undergraduate at Balliol College, Oxford, and was finished shortly after he graduated. Balliol was then under the stimulating Mastership of Benjamin Jowett. The College and Oxford in general were fertilized with a rich alluvium of significant thought which settled from a full, sometimes violent flood of ideas. Materialism, estheticism, and positivism, the cultural doctrines of Arnold, the social schemes of Ruskin, the eclecticism of the Broad Church Movement, the Catholicism of the Tractarians, and the evolutionary theories of the scientists were debated in the common rooms and halls of the Colleges.
