- W2076761172 abstract "INTRODUCTION: Individuals with Down Syndrome (DS) have poor levels of aerobic capacity (VO2peak), reduced pulmonary function and low levels of peak exercise ventilation. It is unknown if their low physical work capacity is related to cardiovascular factors or pulmonary factors such as poor oxygen saturation (SpO2). PURPOSE: We investigated if low VO2peak during a maximal exercise test in persons with DS is related to heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP) and/or SpO2. METHODS: 9 individuals with DS (20.4 ± 1.8 years) and 7 without DS (19.9 ± 1.8 years) participated in this study. They completed a maximal cycle ergometer exercise test consisting of a 3-min warm up followed by an increase in load of 16 watts every minute until exhaustion. Metabolic data, HR and arterial oxygen saturation were continuously collected. Systolic Blood Pressure (SBP) was manually measured every 2 minutes using an analogical sphygmomanometer. RESULTS: Individuals with DS exhibited lower (p<.05) VO2peak (27.7±7.4 vs. 44.8±4.1ml/min/kg), lower HR peak (146.8±21.0 vs. 188.1±9.3bpm) and lower peak SBP (137.9 ± 16.2Hg vs. 167.9 ± 15.2mmHg). However, SpO2 changed little in either group, although a significant (p<.05) increase in SpO2 was seen in persons with DS (96 ± 1.8% vs. 98.3 ± 1.4%) but not in controls (98.7 ± 1% vs. 97.7 ± 1.6%). The difference in maximal SBP disappeared completely when controlling for maximal work load. However, VO2peak was still significantly different between groups after controlling for maximal SBP. There was no difference between groups after controlling maximal HR. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that pulmonary function and SpO2 do not impact the low VO2peak in persons with DS. The low peak SBP is entirely due to the lower work rate reached, but did not impact the group difference in VO2peak. Instead, low maximal HR appears to be the major limitation to VO2peak in persons with DS. (Supported by MEC, reference DEP2005-00202-C04-01)" @default.
