Inspiring mixtures containing no CO2 and less than 2 per cent O2 lowered PaO2 and caused hyperventilation and hypocapnia. 3. Mixtures containing no CO2 and approximately 10 per cent O2 lowered PaO2, but not as much as with 2 per cent O2, and did but change respiratory pattern or PaCO2. 4. Induced hyperoxia depressed respiration. 5. Mixtures containing 10 per cent CO2 increased PaCO2, stimulated respiration and increased PaCO2. 6. Information was obtained on the respiratory effect of double vagotomy and on the presence of peripheral chemoreceptors. 7. The data support the view that arterial blood gas is regulated within broad limits in the turtle." @default.
