- W2076852181 abstract "The study examined the extent that specific behavioral treatment components within a combined treatment “package” for chronic low-back pain contributed to outcome effects. Four chronic, intractable low-back pain male inpatients served as subjects. Objectively assessed daily pain, medication intake and up-time as well as subjective pain intensity ratings were used as dependent measures A nonconcurrent multiple baseline across subjects design was used in which subjects were assigned to one of four baseline lengths. Each subject then received four behavioral treatment components (i.e., training in progressive muscular relaxation, assertion, functional pain-behavioral analysis, and social reinforcement of increased activity) in an additive, order-balanced fashion. Five 40- to 50-min sessions over a 5-day period were spent focusing on each component before the next was added. Results showed that relaxation training contributed most to overall improvement, followed by social reinforcement of increased activity. Functional pain-behavioral analysis training failed to contribute, with assertion training having minimal, if any, effects. No clear order effects were found. It was concluded that training in relaxation and activity reinforcement were necessary for the production of observed effects." @default.
