- W2076868962 abstract "With improved neonatal management, there is an increasing rate of survival among children who were born at extremely low birthweight (ELBW: 500-1000g) or very low birthweight (VLBW: 1001-1500g). This study was intended to determine the effects of ELBW and VLBW on neuromotor ability in 5- to 7-year-old children. Fourteen ELBW and 20 VLBW children with no manifestation of any overt neuromuscular disability were compared to 24 normal birthweight (NBW:>2500g) term controls. The following data were collected: simple reaction time of the legs, maximal speed of a 30-sec cycling task at “zero” resistance, and various components of coordination by a whole body coordination test. The main finding was a deficiency in performance of the ELBW group, compared with the VLBW and, in particularly, with the NBW group. Specifically, the ELBW children had a slower reaction time (342±48, 339±58 and 403±115 msec for NBW, VLBW and ELBW, respectively), a lower maximal cycling speed (143±13, 143±11 and 128±13 rpm, respectively) and lower coordination scores (composite motor score of 84.6±8.4, 81.5±11 and 73.4±10.3, respectively) These findings suggest that ELBW, associated with prenatal growth restriction and a complicated perinatal course, is likely to result in deficient motor ability in children, even when they do not display overt neuromuscular disability." @default.
