- W2076914335 abstract "On the night of 26/27 September 1979 (E.S.T.), photometric observations of a weak but well defined SAR-arc were made from two ground stations ; one at Albany, New York (geographic latitude 42.68°N, longitude 286.18°E, geomagnetic latitude 54.3°N) and another at Plattsburgh, New York (geographic latitude 44.69°N, longitude 286.47°E, geomagnetic latitude 56.3°N). Interferometric measurements of the thermospheric temperatures and winds were also made from Albany, New York during this night. The optical data were studied in conjunction with the magnetograms obtained concurrently from stations over Canada. The results include: (1) triangulation from the two stations showed that the height of the arc was in the range of 370–460 km, with an average value of 401 km, and that the arc moved rapidly both equatorward and downward during the period of steep increase of its intensity, (2) magnetograms showed a striking coincidence between the onset of the SAR-arc and that of an isolated magnetic substorm, suggesting a physical link between the two phenomena and (3) measurements of the thermospheric temperatures and winds showed sharp increases in both temperature and equatorward wind velocity approximately 1 h after the onset of an isolated magnetic substorm, indicating a definite thermospheric response to auroral heating associated with the isolated magnetic substorm. Both measured temperatures and winds showed wave-like changes. No specific additional heating within the arc was detected." @default.
