- W2077116676 abstract "Abstract This article explores how young people (aged 8–18) of Latin American descent living in the north of England negotiate sameness and belonging within a context of socio-cultural invisibility (sparse presence of Latin Americans). It is argued that these young people, who are characterised by a diversity of marked and unmarked embodiments, use in/visibility strategies in order to navigate the visual regime of ethno-cultural difference which characterises their integration context. With these strategies, they either reproduce notions of sameness or enact forms of cultural diversity to gain membership to the places where they live. Keywords: Latin Americanchildrenembodimentin/visibilitysamenessbelonging Acknowledgements I am very grateful to the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) in the UK for funding the research which informs this paper. I would like to thank all the adults and young people who took part in the research. I greatly appreciate the constructive and helpful comments provided by Andrew Long, Robert Vanderbeck, Louise Waite and two anonymous reviewers. Notes For the purposes of this article, Latin America refers to all the countries in Central and South America in which Spanish or Portuguese are official languages; however, it is important to highlight that there are significant debates surrounding the meaning and colonial connotations of this collective term (cf. Mignolo Citation2005, Eakin Citation2007). I use these conventional terms of reference to describe the descendants of immigrants, although I acknowledge that these categories are constructed and the boundaries between generations are often blurred (Levitt and Waters Citation2002). This article builds on my work with Colombian families and young people in the north of England, see Mas Giralt Citation(forthcoming). The overall figure from the 2001 Census does not include people born in Paraguay as there was no data available for this country in the Census' data table ‘Residents of England and Wales by selected Country of Birth’ (Office for National Statistics Citation2004). There are differences between the national groups included within the category South America and Central America in these two sets of data, so this comparison has to be considered with caution. Two of the participants took part in the pilot of the project. In all the quotes, bracket ellipses (…) are used to indicate a cut in the text and three-dot ellipses… to indicate pauses in the speech. Panethnicity refers to the extension of ‘ethnic boundaries to incorporate several groups that previously considered themselves distinct ethnicities’ (Roth Citation2009, p. 929)." @default.
