- W207712940 abstract "Drs. Swan and Ganz added their names to popular medical culture by creating and publicizing a practical, bedside pulmonary artery (PA) catheter in 1970.1 Since then, anesthesiologists and other acute care physicians have become proficient in “Swanning” their patients. An accumulation of review articles have provided details in the use of pulmonary artery catheters.2–8 There is a continual expansion of new patient groups in which pulmonary vascular monitoring is used. Recent reviews address the use of Swan-Ganz catheters in critically ill obstetric and pediatric patients.9–10 Several reports now summarize the expected complications associated with pulmonary vascular monitoring.11–14 Fortunately, catheter complications are generally transient and without long term morbidity. Nevertheless, case reports of bizarre complications continue to appear.15" @default.
