- W2077144258 abstract "The distribution of calcium and magnesium was determined in rat kidney homogenate fractions before and during the development of nephrocalcinosis induced by the feeding of a low magnesium (10–20 ppm) diet for 12 days. In the normal kidney, magnesium was distributed throughout the five fractions (nuclear-debris, mitochondrial, light mitochondrial, microsomal and supernate) in proportion to protein but calcium was concentrated in the acid phosphatase-rich light mitochondrial fraction. Calcium accumulation began between 24–48 hr of the first low magnesium meal and was confined to the nuclear-debris (74–90%) and mitochondrial (10–26%) fractions at its earliest detection. Supernate calcium was elevated only after 10 days. Although serum magnesium was depressed by 33% within 15 hr, kidney magnesium was constant throughout the experimental period except for a slight reduction in the mitochondrial fraction after 8 days. Morphologically, the calcium accumulation was primarily in the form of an intranephronic calculosis. The data are discussed in terms of their bearing on the questions of the origins and identity of calculus matrix." @default.
