- W2077182762 abstract "Researchers at the University of Arizona, Tucson, have discovered evidence to support the bihormonal theory of diabetes—that the disease is caused by an excess of glucagon as well as a deficiency of insulin. Professor of chemistry Victor J. Hruby, PhD, working with Marvin D. Bregman, PhD, and Dev Trivedi, MS, produced an analog of glucagon ([1-Nα-trinitrophenylhistidine, 12-homoarginine] glucagon, or THG) by altering the side groups of two amino acids on the hormone. The resulting THG is a potent antagonist of the glucagon-stimulated adenylate cyclase system in rat liver. It presumably works by reversibly binding to glucagon receptors on liver cells, competing successfully with glucagon and thereby preventing glycogenolysis (and release of glucose) in the liver. The substance was tested for its ability to lower blood glucose concentrations in diabetic rats by David G. Johnson, MD, associate professor of pharmacology, and Camy Ulichny Goebel, of the Department of Internal Medicine at" @default.
