- W2077256329 abstract "The presence of a solvent in the polymer is known to affect its mechanical properties; the same applies to a temperature elevation, as long as there is no significant energetic reaction between the polymer and solvent, which could become apparent as heat. A pure polymer in the glass-like state will change to the highly elastic state on introducing a solvent, and will subsequently change to the state of viscous flow [1]. As a result of the different mechanisms of action of temperature and solvent on the polymer, one would also expect some difference to exist in the transition mechanism from one state to another when each of the above factors acts separately on the polymer. The contrast should be quite distinct where polymers have a pronounced macromolecular structure, the reason being the difference in solvent sorption by the individual zones. We thought it worthwhile to examine the deformation of crystalline polymers caused by the sorption of a solvent. A new method and instrument was developed for determining the deformation of polymers under the combined effect of static stress and solvent. The described method was based on the modified thermomechanical method suggested by Kargin and co-workers [2]. It differed by ensuring a constant increase of solvent concentration rather than of temperature." @default.
