- W2077302893 abstract "Abstract From Mie theory calculations it is shown that the angle, θ 1 , at which the first minimum in scattering intensity occurs is given by the relation D λ m sin θ 1 2 = 1.062 − 0.347 m where D is the diameter of the scattering spheres, λ m is the wave length of light in the medium, and m is the refractive index ratio of scattering particles to medium. This relation holds for m = 1.00 to 1.55, and applies to incident unpolarized light and the vertical component of the scattered radiation. Using this equation, particle diameters have been determined at several wave lengths for 23 synthetic latices ranging in D from 2080 to 10,100 A. The results show that D is independent of λ m when the systems are monodisperse. For polydisperse systems D increases with λ m , and only low λ m 's yield the weight average for D . The variation of D with λ m can be used as a qualitative index of size distribution. This method can be made very rapid, and under suitable conditions it can be used to measure diameters ranging from about 0.18 to 4 microns." @default.
