- W2077393544 abstract "Lysis of Escherichia coli C infected with bacteriophage φX174 leads to a local rupture of cells without detectable change in cell wall structure. Lysis and bacteriophage release are inhibited after addition of 20% sucrose to the growth medium. Infected “sucrose cells” keep their rodlike shape, but can be destroyed by osmotic shock. The presence of a lytic enzyme in the bacteriophage or in the infected cell could not be demonstrated. For φX174-induced lysis, DNA synthesis is required only in the initial period after infection, during which φX-replicative form is synthesized. The formation of progeny DNA and of progeny phage may be blocked by fluorouracildeoxyriboside without inhibition of lysis. φX-induced lysis depends on the biosynthesis of a chloramphenicol-sensitive material, probably a protein, late in the latent period and later than the time at which φX coat proteins are manufactured. A number of hydroxylamine-induced temperature-sensitive mutants of φX174, which do not complement each other functionally and are probably all altered in coat protein structure, do not form progeny at 41°C. Lysis of cells infected with these mutants however is not affected." @default.
