- W2077423326 abstract "1101 PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a concurrent resistance and endurance training program in adults. METHODS: Thirteen healthy adults (mean ± SD age 44.08 ± 9.63 y, weight 75.07 ± 19.69 kg, height 165 ± 9.63 cm), 2 males and 11 females, participated for 14 weeks in a concurrent resistance and endurance training program three days per week. All subjects signed an informed consent form, and completed a PAR-Q form before testing/training. The subjects were randomly divided into two groups, one group that performed resistance training first and one group that performed endurance training first. After 30 minutes of training, the groups switched type of training. Pretesting/posttesting consisted of body composition by hydrostatic weighing, measured maximal oxygen consumption through graded exercise testing, and 3 RM testing of muscular strength in bench press, leg extension, leg curl, and triceps pulldown. Pre-post comparisons were made using a paired t-test with p<0.05 as the significance level. RESULTS: No significant change was noted in cardiovascular (CV) fitness (p = 0.766), regardless whether subjects performed endurance training first or second (p = 0.873). There was no significant change in body composition (p = 0.826), with no difference relative to training order (p = 0.692). Significant improvement (bench press, p = 0.001, leg curl, p = 0.023, triceps extension, p = 0.0.28) was seen in all strength measures except leg extension (p = 0.471). No significant differences were seen in strength measures relative to training order. Upon review of the endurance training protocol, it may have not been intense enough to elicit CV training changes. No attempt was made to alter eating habits, so this may have contributed to the findings in body composition, in connection with the intensity of the CV endurance program. Although strength change was significant, it is possible that endurance training did interfere with leg extension strength improvement. These results are similar to concurrent training research in our laboratory with younger males and females, where training order made no difference in results. It also is opposite of results received with these younger groups, where improvements were seen in CV fitness and body composition, as well as strength. CONCLUSION: It appears that more intense CV training is needed in this population to elicit significant change. More research in this age group should be performed to determine intensities needed to elicit change in cardiovascular fitness and body composition in concurrent training protocols." @default.
