- W2077446424 abstract "This article relates problems with the assumptions of village studies, and suggests ways of turning these issues towards region and history. The case concerns ways in which communities of Karen have been caught up in internal tensions as well as regional dynamics of both world-view and political economy, and how in the current context marginal communities such as Karen villages are framed by decisions at national and international levels. Village studies used to define anthropological practice, and they reinforced a particular sense of culture, social life, and identity. These have become increasingly problematic as anthropologists and others confront issues of change and history, and have contributed to a sense of the facts of ethnography as somewhat fictitious (Clifford and Marcus 1986; Gupta and Ferguson 1997). My aim in this article is to suggest a way to deal with the facts of ethnography not as indicative of an ethnic group or a culture, but as an angle on some dimensions of the make-up of mainland Southeast Asia as a region over time. As Kuhn (1970) has demonstrated, data collection and theoretical explanation are mutually reinforcing. Within anthropology, shifts in theoretical frameworks go hand in hand with a changing scope of analysis - in early evolutionary and diffusionist anthropology, the unit was the whole of human history and prehistory, while in structural-functionalist anthropology the scope became a village, most often standing for a tribe, in an ethnographic present. Post-World War II anthropology is broader and more historical than structural functionalism, while usually not as global as evolutionism and diffusionism (see Kirsch 1982;" @default.
