- W2077772755 abstract "Abstract Endotoxaemia has been identified, using the Limulus lysate technique, in a group of patients with non-septic or septic disorders. Gramnegative bacteraemia was a frequent but not invariable associated finding. If the endotoxaemia is derived from a septic focus which is eliminated, the endotoxaemia promptly disappears. In the absence of a septic focus the endotoxaemia is usually accompanied by hepatic injury, bleeding (especially from the gastrointestinal tract), haemorrhagic or septic pneumonitis, a failing peripheral circulation, and a high mortality. In the laboratory animal with the corresponding syndrome the intestine has been shown to be the source of the endotoxin. It is assumed that the same applies in man, and that it is the result of the failure of the reticuloendothelial system in the liver to clear and destroy endotoxin entering the circulation, whether via the portal vein or, in the case of injury to the wall of the intestine, via the peritoneal cavity." @default.
