- W2077881155 abstract "The public library of Saint-Brieuc holds an 18th century manuscript containing two texts on the subjects of whaling practiced by the Basque seamen of Labourd, a small coastal Province near Spain. About theses two documents we can have a divided opinion concerning the condition of this whaling activity right in the middle of the 18th century. At first sight, it's the feeling that the Basque did not wrong fully take their reputation for being among the best whalers in the world at that time. As a matter of fact they were the forerunners of whaling and might have discovered America long before Christopher Colombus, precisely while chasing the whales. These tough and courageous whalers had the feeling to belong to the elite and they initiated the Dutch and the English to the art of whaling. The second impression that we keep from these texts is that of a waning whaling activity, which was even disappearing and did not hold out well against the loss of Canada and Newfoundland and the competition of the former English an Dutch apprentices who overtook their masters, and finally against the lack of a coherent policy from national and local authorities." @default.
