Such an assumption often inhibits, quite unintentionally, the dissemination of clinically important information to the practicing physician. This report deals with one such situation: the effect of heparin on the one-stage prothrombin time. As will be documented here, prolongation of the prothrombin time by heparin introduces a frequently unrecognized variable into the proper establishment and maintenance of anticoagulant therapy with prothrombinopenic (coumarin-type) agents. Our interest in this problem was...References1.
