- W2077891199 abstract "Summary The maintenance of aggregates of Drosophila embryonic cells depends on continuing protein synthesis. Cells aggregate in the presence of puromycin but undergo dissociation after 3 hours, at a time when protein synthesis as measured by the incorporation of l -leucine- 3 H ceases. Aggregates are also formed in the presence of actinomycin D, but dissociate after 6 hours. In the latter case, RNA synthesis as measured by the incorporation of uridine- 3 H ceases after 3 hours, but protein synthesis continues for 3 or 4 additional hours, exhibiting an exponential decay rate during this period with a half-life of about 70 minutes. Pulse-labeling experiments in the absence of actinomycin D yield a half-life of about 190 minutes for rapidly labeled RNA (presumably messenger RNA), but other evidence suggests extensive recycling of label under these circumstances. In the presence of actinomycin D the half-life of rapidly labeled RNA is about 40 minutes. It is concluded that the aggregation of Drosophila embryonic cells probably depends on the continuing synthesis of one or more “aggregation proteins”, that these proteins have a relatively rapid turnover rate, but that their messenger RNAs have a half-life somewhat larger than 40 minutes but considerably shorter than 190 minutes." @default.
