- W2078011657 abstract "The purpose of this study is to investigate the sex and age related differences in the economy of walking and of running in males (n = 61) and females (n = 72) using data from the Amsterdam Growth and Health Longitudinal Study. Economy was defined as the oxygen uptake (VO2) at submaximal walking and running speed on a treadmill (Quinton, model 18–54, USA). VO2 was measured directly with an Ergoanalyser (Jaeger, NL). Economy of walking (5 km/h) and running (8 km/h) was measured in steady state conditions by the submaximal oxygen uptake (1/min) related to body mass (kg). During the entire period of study the measurements were carried out with the same equipment and by the same tester in a mobile laboratory. Running was measured nine times from age 13 till age 36 years and walking was measured three times between 29 and 36 years of age. The results demonstrate a consistently significantly (p < 0.01) higher economy in running in females compared to males from age 13 till 27 years but from 27 till 36 years this difference was not observed. In both sexes the economy increased significantly in walking and running (p < 0.01) with age. The greatest age changes in running economy occurred during adolescence, but between age 29 and 36 no significant changes could be observed. The walking economy however increased significantly in both sexes between age 29 and 36 years of age. It can be concluded that females have higher economy in running than males but not in walking. The greatest increase in running economy is during the adolescent period, but at adult age walking economy is still increasing." @default.
