- W2078014923 abstract "In the late 1980s in Greece, a special type of secondary school, the State Music School, was introduced with the aim to promote music education. This paper examines the ways in which traditional Greek music is being taught in these music schools, and the factors affecting the teaching of traditional music. In particular, it examines the effect of institutionalised teaching upon Demotiki and Byzantine music. The paper is based upon data, collected by the author during fieldwork carried out in Greek music schools between April 1998 and June 1999. The data comprised questionnaires for teachers of music and head teachers, group interviews with pupils; personal interviews with teachers of traditional music, head teachers and members of the committee responsible for these schools. Examination of the teaching methods applied in the teaching of the two traditional types of Greek music showed that traditional music alters significantly when introduced in formal institutions." @default.
