- W2078016148 abstract "A systematic study of the photoconductive properties of pure and doped triphenylene films and crystals has been made to determine the involvement of the singlet and triplet states of both host and guest in the conduction process. The guest molecules were the aromatic hydrocarbons coronene, anthracene, azulene, phenanthrene, pyrene, tetracene and pentacene, in concentrations between 1–3 per cent. In pure triphenylene photoconductivity arises by excitation in the singlet wavelength region. No evidence is observed that the triplet level participates in photoconduction. For doped triphenylene the lower lying impurity singlets are more effective in promoting photoconduction than the triphenylene singlet itself. The observed variation of the photocurrent with light intensity follows powers both greater or less than unity. Power greater than unity is explained by the mechanism of exciton-exciton interactions for the creation of free carriers. Exciton recombination rates calculated from the experimental results and the theory formulated to include single and double exciton processes are in good agreement with the theoretically calculated values by Choi and Rice. For powers less than one, the single exciton model is used. That the experimentally observed power of the intensity dependence is not quite equal to two, as is expected for the double exciton process, is explained by the presence of trapping levels. A consequence of the double exciton mechanism is that additional energy is required to promote an electron from an excited triphenylene or impurity singlet into triphenylene conduction levels. This locates the conduction level above the triphenylene singlet state." @default.
