- W2078130328 abstract "The slope of the linear regression between distance and time in maximal swims, the critical velocity (Cv) is a generally accepted aerobic index, however, the y-intercept in this relationship, the anaerobic distance capacity (ADC), has not shown to be consistently correlated with performance or other anaerobic capacity markers. A faster VO2 kinetics, on the other hand, have been associated to endurance performance in swimming. PURPOSE: To verify the relationships between VO2 kinetics parameters determined at heavy and severe intensities and Cv and AWC in well trained swimmers. METHODS: 13 male swimmers (20.7 ± 3.0 yr.; 74.9 ±12.48 kg; 1.80 ± 0.08m) performed: 1) 5 × 200 m with 30 s rest and 5-10% velocity increment in between for determination of velocity at maximal oxygen uptake (vVO2max), at ventilatory threshold (vVT) and OBLA; 2) two 6-min constant velocity exercise bouts at D25% [= VT + 0.25 × (VO2max - VT)]. All the tests were performed in front crawl with breath by breath analysis (K4b2, Cosmed, Italy) using a swimming snorkel (Aquatrainer). The parameters of the VO2 kinetics were modelled with two exponential functions. Cv and ADC were calculated from distance-time modelling of 200 and 400 m races, performed within 1 month from the other tests. RESULTS: Cv (1.349 ± 0.30 ms-1) presented a significant correlation with vVO2max (1.47 ± 0.07 ms-1; r = 0.70; p = 0.007), vVT (1.29 ± 0.08 ms-1; r = 0.64; p = 0.02), OBLA (1.36 ± 0.1 ms-1; r = 0.71; p = 0.007) and with the primary phase time constant (t1) for heavy swimming (15.7 ± 5.0 s; r = -0.8; p = 0.001). ADC (24.19 ± 10.74 m) showed a significant correlation with t1 for severe swimming (15.9 ± 4.9 s; r = 0.57; p = 0.04). CONCLUSIONS: In spite of the constraints imposed by swimming with a snorkel, aerobic markers determined using this procedure showed a high correlation with Cv in free swimming, supporting its concurrent validity for the physiological evaluation of swimmers. Individual VO2 kinetics responses variation according to intensity domain may explain the contradictory results regarding the relationship of these parameters to Cv or ADC. Nevertheless, it seems that a slower primary phase time constant in the severe domain is associated with a higher ADC, thought to represent a finite work capacity above Cv, confirming its dependency on the rate of VO2 on-kinetics." @default.
