- W207813686 abstract "During the past decade there has been a significant renewal of interest in the role of the sympathetic nervous system as it relates to the mediation or modulation of pain [1–7]. Evidence to support this observation may be found in the increasing numbers of published reports and presentations to scientific societies regarding basic and clinical aspects of sympathetically maintained pain (SMP). The devastating features of SMP syndromes, including reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD), algodystrophy, allodynia, and other forms of the causalgia/hyperpathia complex, were described clinically in detail in the last century [8,9]. However, it is only recently that certain components of the complex pathophysiological process that creates SMP have been elaborated [10– 13]. This apparent trend toward systematic, controlled research of the sympathetic nervous system and pain may represent, to the SMP sufferer, a future hope for relief from such debilitating symptoms." @default.
