- W2078166058 abstract "It is necessary to present a brief summary of the pathology of chronic myeloid leukæmia before discussing the various methods of treatment that are available. First, it must be realised that leukæmia is not, sensu stricto, a disease of the blood. The circulating fluid is not a tissue but is the product of a variety of organs. It is known that, during post-natal life, the red corpuscles and granular leucocytes arise in the bone-marrow, whereas lymphocytes are only produced in lymphadenoid tissue, including the Malpighian bodies of the spleen. In the embryo, conditions are very different; granular leucocytes and red cells are produced in the liver and spleen pulp, the formative process being transferred to the bone-marrow only shortly before birth. The spleen is, therefore, a bi-partite organ, the Malpighian bodies being permanently lymphatic structures, which never give rise to granulocytes or red corpuscles, whereas the pulp is a potentially myeloid organ throughout life. It is, of course, probable that there exist functional relationships between the various parts of the hæmatopoietic system in spite of the very divergent characters of the tissues; for example, Ziegler showed that it is possible to destroy the lymphatic tissue of the spleen by administering suitable doses of X rays, and, as a result, hyperplasia of the bone-marrow develops. All the available evidence points to the bone-marrow as being the seat of the primary pathological change in myeloid leukæmia, and for this reason it were well to term the morbid process myelosis." @default.
