- W2078212862 abstract "Abstract Random bred Syrian hamsters sensitized with guinea pig spinal cord and immunologic adjuvants developed a chronic neurological disease characterized by a latent period of 50 to 100 days between sensitization and onset of clinical paralytic signs, and by chronic, often relapsing clinical disease. Histopathologic studies revealed inflammatory infiltrates of mononuclear cells and evidence of focal demyelination throughout the neuraxis in 70% of the subjects examined 300 days postsensitization. Absence of clinical and histologic disease in hamsters injected with immunologic adjuvants or nervous tissue alone suggested that the disease was mediated by immunological mechanisms and probably a chronic variant of experimental allergic encephalomyelitis. From evidence presented it appears that the chronic disease in hamsters is not due to intrinsic properties of the sensitizing inoculum, age at sensitization, or to unusual delays in the ability of hamsters to generate cellular immune responses. Alternative mechanisms whereby the host may modulate patterns of a chronic neurological disease are discussed. Elucidation of these mechanisms may afford insight into chronic, relapsing neurological diseases of humans." @default.
