- W2078290996 abstract "We may all cogitate how greatly we have been indebted to the living contact of older minds, in societies like our own, in kindling our early enthusiasm for the study of the rocks, rather than to printed papers; so you will therefore pardon a tribute to the memory of one who was to many of us a kindly censor and a loving friend. Charles William Peach died 1st March 1886, at the ripe age of eighty-five. His natural powers gradually abated, and for over three years he had not gladdened our evening meetings by his presence, even in old age beaming over with a youthful enthusiasm. This veritable old man of the sea, as he playfully dubbed himself, was an individuality never to be forgotten. The way in which he disinterred strange icthyolite, or beauteous fossil fern from an unlikely slab, enlivening his labour with quaint jokes all his own, are resting-places in many a tyro’s remembrances of fossil-hunting excursions. And a microscopic demonstration by Peach put to shame the prelections of many professional histologists. It seems but yesterday, though now over twenty years, since we first heard his clear decisive voice on board the Shetland steamer in Wick Bay; many a time afterwards, while accompanying him along crag or sea-coast, we wondered whether the lithe old man shone most as an example of the successful pursuit of knowledge under difficulties, or as a walking testimony that out-of-door natural history studies conduced to a happy old age.Born at Wansford," @default.
