- W2078301957 abstract "It is suggested that family planning and fertility studies can offer an exceptional opportunity for research in the behavioral sciences. The opportunities are enhanced by the fact that high quality sample surveys can be carried out in this field especially in the developing areas. In Malaysia for example questions about a wide range of variables related to each other as well as to fertility can be asked. Perhaps the most important contribution that social science techniques have made so far to the program is to provide some facts to replace speculation and myth. A great deal of empirical work pertinent to family planning in recent years describes the distribution of behavior for some intermediate variables and their connection to fertility on the one hand and to social and demographic classifications of the other hand. Studies are now emerging that are trying to establsih what proportion of women insserted with an IUD terminate at various periods of time as a result of pregnancy expulsion or intentional removal of the device. Such studies also take into account the characteristics of the couples involved the areas in which they live and the program itself. Attitudes norms and values about family life are important to know in studying fertility. The most basic general question is: What are the necessary and sufficient conditions for a sharp reduction in fertility from preindustrial levels? Another crucial question is: What are the barriers that prevent some countries from organizing and really implementing the plans they have on paper when even money and technical personnel seem to be availabe and there seems to be consensus on the objective?" @default.
