- W2078312402 abstract "AbstractThe membrane immunofluorescence test, both in its direct and indirect form, has been applied to virus induced murine lymphomas of several types, and shows the presence of virally determined new surface antigens. On Burkitt lymphoma cells, grown in vitro as established culture lines of lymphoblastoid cells in stationary suspension, or taken from biopsy material in vivo, a characteristic new membrane antigen complex can be demonstrated. It has been conclusively shown that this finding is not dependent on the presence of isoantibodies. In the culture lines, the presence of the membrane antigen complex is dependent on a carrier state for the herpes-type Epstein-Barr (EB) virus. Regular high-titered antibodies against the EBV associated membrane complex are found in three disease conditions: infectious mononucleosis, Burkitt’s lymphoma, and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Lymphoproliferative diseases of many other kinds and oro-, or hypopharyngeal carcinomas do not show this behaviour. Although dependent on the presence of the EB-virus, the membrane antigen complex is not identical with the presumably viral, intracellular antigens, detected by the Henle-test. This has been shown by absorption experiments of antisera containing both types of antibodies and by the existence of a small number of ‘discordant’ sera that, in contrast to 81% of the total sera tested, has only one activity, but not the other (anti-EBV or membrane, respectively). The implications of these findings will be discussed." @default.
