- W2078321005 abstract "Abstract A wide range of vapour-quenched Al-Ni, Al-Cu and Al-Fe alloys have been prepared by co-sputtering in an r.f. getter-sputtering unit. The resulting structures have been investigated by transmission electron microscopy, and compared with the corresponding equilibrium, liquid-quenched and thermal evaporated structures. Most of the vapour-quenched alloys consist of polycrystalline nonequilibrium phases with grain sizes of ~50A. The solid solubilities of Ni, Cu and Fe in Al can be extended by vapour-quenching well beyond the values obtained by liquid-quenching, and the difference can be ascribed to clustering effects in liquid alloys. Over a wide composition range, vapour-quenched Al-Ni and Al-Cu are disordered b.c.c. This phase replaces more complex and ordered equilibrium phases because of the relatively slow rate of surface diffusion during deposition." @default.
