- W2078389777 abstract "This is a solidly researched and carefully argued study of the life and times of Georg Eder, an influential Catholic official and publicist in sixteenth-century Vienna. Fulton emphasises Eder's role as a lay Catholic writer, active during a time of religious uncertainty and conflict in Austria. Eder is most famous for publishing in 1573 a Catholic polemical work, the Evangelische Inquisition, which was condemned by the (Catholic) Emperor Maximilian II. Maximilian, a religious moderate treading a careful line between the Catholic identity of the dynasty and the Protestantism of much of the Austrian nobility, appreciated neither the combative anti-Protestant tone of the work nor the forceful critique of lukewarm Catholic courtiers. Most of all, it appears, the Emperor was furious at Eder's implied criticism of Maximilian's personal piety, which was traditional and strongly influenced by a kind of non-confessional (or pre-confessional) humanism. From about 1550 until 1573, Eder had pursued a successful career in the Austrian government, based, Fulton argues, on his reputation as a solidly Catholic Habsburg loyalist. The condemnation of the Evangelische Inquisition appeared to signal the end of Eder's career." @default.
