- W2078502232 abstract "Multiple cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors have been shown to produce the initial stages of atherosclerosis in today's youth. Negative trends are becoming apparent in youth with respect to physical activity and obesity, which may influence other CVD risk factors. PURPOSE To determine the level of physical activity intensity (PAI) and its relationship to other CVD risk factors in children. METHODS Thirty-two 5th grade children (10.5±0.5 years old) participated in a cardiovascular screening program that evaluated several CVD risk factors (blood pressure, estimated VO2, blood lipids, glucose, family history, smoking status, body composition, and physical activity). PAI was assessed using an accelerometer for seven days, which produced total minutes (Tmin). Intensity was subdivided into light to moderate (L-M) and intensities of moderate to very hard (M-VH). Estimated VO2 was assessed using a 7-minute step test and body composition was assessed using a 2-site skinfold measurement. Blood lipids and glucose were determined following a 12 hour fast. The remaining CVD risk factors were assessed by a questionnaire. RESULTS L-M and M-VH minutes for the seven days was 10080.3± 115.8 and 536.3±217.5, respectively. L-M minutes did not correlate to individual or combined number of CVD risk factors. M-VH minutes were observed to be significantly correlated (r=0.59, p < .01) to estVO2. In addition, a significant correlation (r=0.45, p < .02) was observed between M-VH minutes and the total number of CVD risk factors for each individual. CONCLUSION These findings appear to suggest that Tmin at M-VH intensities do not have an influence on individual risk factors in our youth, except for estVO2. However, when combining an individual's number of CVD risk factors, it appears that PAI at M-VH intensity levels has a positive influence. These results would continue to support the importance of promoting PAI, at moderate to above intensities, in our youth. Supported by the Central Michigan Rural Health Partnership" @default.
