Eighteen cats with chronically implanted electrodes were studied during wakefulness and sleep, with somatic, visual and auditory stimulation; the responses were recorded in different convergent structures: marginalis anterior and suprasylvian gyri, centrum medianum, mesencephalic reticular formation, gigantocellularis nucleus of the bulbar reticular formation. Twenty-five consecutive responses were averaged in each stage of sleep and compared, before and after bilateral removal of the primary sensory areas. 2. In intact animals, and at each level, all the stimuli evoke responses which are largest during drowsiness and slow sleep, smallest during fast sleep and wakefulness. 3. After the removal of both primary cortical areas, the modifications of the corresponding responses during sleep are no longer observed. Each primary cortical area seems to control the associative afferents only within the same sensory system. 4. When the bilateral lesion is incomplete, the normal evolution reappears 3–5 weeks after surgery. 5. The enhancement of the descending control exerted upon the associative afferents by primary afferents during fast sleep, its specificity, its nature and its points of impact are discussed. 1. Ce travail a été effectué sur 18 chats porteurs d'électrodes à demeure; les réponses aux diverses stimulations sensorielles (somatique, visuelle, auditive) sont recueillies au niveau du gyrus marginal antérieur et suprasylvien, du centre médian, du noyau latéral postérieur, du pulvinar, de la formation réticulée mésencéphalique et du noyau gigantocellulaire de la réticulée bulbaire. Les moyennes de 25 réponses consécutives sont recueillies dans chacun des états de veille et de sommeil et les amplitudes de ces réponses sont comparées; l'évolution est étudiée avant et après ablation bilatérale de chacune des aires sensorielles primaires. 2. Sur les animaux intacts, les réponses associatives sont les plus amples pendant la somnolence et le sommeil à ondes lentes, les moins amples pendant la veille et le sommeil à activité corticale rapide. 3. Après ablation bilatérale de chaque aire sensorielle primaire, on n'observe plus l'évolution des réponses correspondant à l'aire corticale lésée. Chaque aire corticale semble contrôle uniquement les afférences associatives du même système sensoriel. 4. Lorsque l'ablation n'est pas totale, l'évolution normale réapparaît 3 à 5 semaines après la lésion. 5. L'accroissement du contrôle corticifuge descendant pendant le sommeil à activité corticale rapide, sa spécificité, sa nature, ses points d'impact, sont ensuite discutés." @default.
