- W2078542002 abstract "Measurements on benzene and dioxane solutions of mercuric halides show that, notwithstanding recent objections, the solutions of these halides exhibit considerable dipole moments. The values obtained were 1.01 and 1.47 D for the chloride and bromide in benzene, respectively, and 1.27, 1.79, and 1.87 for the chloride, bromide, and iodide in dioxane, respectively. These values are consistent with the formation of donor–acceptor (DA) complexes between the benzene or dioxane and the mercuric halides. Calculated dipole moments agree with the experimental results by assuming either an X–Hg–X angle of 140°–160°, or a δ value of 0.07–0.15 for the complex Dδ+Aδ−. The true situation is probably intermediate with both factors playing a part so that both the partial charges and the deviations from linearity are probably smaller than the values quoted above." @default.
