The influence of various additives on the size and the dynamic behaviour of the micelles was studied. As additives the n-alco- hols from ethanol to octanol and different types of hydrocarbons, i.e. n-decane as an aliphatic, toluene as an aromatic and cyclohexane as an alicyclic hydrocarbon were used. With increasing concentrations of the short chain alcohols, the rods become shorter and are transformed to spheres; the magnitude of the effect increases with increasing chain length of the alcohol. Pentanol and hexanol also lead to shorter aggregates. The higher homologous alcohols, however, promote a growth of the rods. The aliphatic hydrocarbon leads to shorter rods and to a transition back to spherical micelles, whereas toluene and also the cyclohexane promote a further growth to longer rods. The kinetic measurements show that the lifetime of monomers inside the micelles is little affected by the additives, but the lifetime of the whole micelles is generally shortened by several orders of magnitude by those additives which lead to smaller micelles, whereas the other additives do not affect the lifetime of the micelles significantly.KeywordsSurfactant SolutionSpherical MicelleShort Chain AlcoholDouble Logarithmic PlotRelaxation Time ConstantThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
