- W2078588434 abstract "Abstract Phenylhydrazine hydrochloride USP produced histologic changes in the lymphatic tissue of the appendix and spleen of the white New Zealand laboratory rabbit (Oryctolagus domesticus). The drug had been administered intraperitoneally every other day for 12 weeks. Paraffin sections of appendix and spleen were stained with hematoxylin and eosin, and with Giemsa. In addition, appendix sections were subjected to a gramtype tissue stain to demonstrate the presence of bacteria. There was a decrease in the size of the appendiceal lymph nodules, which was caused by a depletion of small lymphocytes. A striking decrease occurred in the number of gram-positive bacilli (Bacillus, Cohn group) that normally inhabit the appendiceal intranodular area. In the spleen, increased numbers of small lymphocytes appeared in the red pulp. These lymphocytes were adjacent to phagocytically active reticuloendothelial cells that were filled with hemosiderin. Large amounts of intra- and extracellular hemosiderin reflected the chronic hemolytic anemia in the treated rabbits. Developmental stages of extramedullary erythropoiesis and megakaryocytogenesis were present in the sinusoidal and intrasinusoidal spaces." @default.
