- W2078593341 abstract "Mitochondria isolated from etiolated cotyledons of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) oxidize glycine poorly, whereas mitochondria isolated from the cotyledons of light-grown sunflower seedlings oxidized glycine at a rate equal to approx. 60% of the rate with malate as substrate, with good respiratory control and ADP/O ratios comparable to those obtained with malate as substrate. The capacity of sunflower cotyledon mitochondria to oxidize glycine and the activity of the microbody marker enzyme glycollate oxidase increased simultaneously during growth of seedlings in the light. These increases in enzyme activity of the glycollate path are dependent on light and independent of Chl synthesis. Mitochondrial preparations obtained from the cotyledons of dark-grown sunflower cotyledons subjected to 5 min illumination/day exhibit good rates of glycine oxidation yet contain little Chl. Microbodies were largely removed from these preparations by purification on a sucrose gradient." @default.
