- W2078600543 abstract "In recent months, a method for the removal of myelographic contrast agent has been utilized in our department which has proved safe, rapid, and effective. Method After completion of the myelographic examination, a sterile plastic tubing2 is attached between the hub of the spinal needle and the syringe used to withdraw the contrast agent (Fig. 1). This allows the operator's hands to be well outside the field of radiation. Under fluoroscopic control, the recollection can then be facilitated by using the effect of gravity upon the hyperbaric solution, the patient and/or table being moved accordingly. We have found this technic satisfactory both in reducing the time of withdrawal of contrast agent and in the removal of all the opaque media (Fig. 2). Discussion Kubik and Hampton presented a method for the removal of the potentially irritating contrast agent from the subarachnoid space by aspiration of the column with a syringe attached directly to the spinal needle (3). This has remained the time-honored and generally accepted method of removal of such opaque material. The method has not always proved satisfactory in the complete and rapid removal of all the Pantopaque, however, and subsequent reports have advocated other means of accomplishing this task. The only previous mention of the technic described in the present report is in Shapiro's text myelography (5), in which he states that “to facilitate removal of the final droplets of oil under fluoroscopic control, a sterile, small-lumen poly-ethylene tube about 16 inches long may be used to connect the syringe to the needle.” Summary A safe, simple, and rapid method for removal of myelographic contrast agent from the subarachnoid space has been presented. Its general usage is advocated." @default.
