- W2078622493 abstract "X-ray mammography is currently the most widely used technique for the detection and localization of breast abnormalities, but this technique has variable specificity due to overlap of tissue densities and limited contrast between malignant and benign tissues. Furthermore, both mammography and ultrasound can be difficult to interpret in patients with breast implants, dense breasts or in patients with post surgery scars or deformity. Numerous articles have indicated that magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may have a role to play in the detection and diagnosis of breast cancer (1–8). Gadobenate dimeglumine (Gd-BOPTA, MultiHance®; Bracco Imaging SpA, Milan, Italy) is currently undergoing development for breast MRI. Unlike other gadolinium agents, Gd-BOPTA interacts weakly and transiently with serum albumin resulting in a two-fold increase of the T1 relaxation rate in blood compared to gadopentetate dimeglumine (Gd-DTPA) and other gadolinium agents at the same concentration (9.7 mM 1 s 1 vs. 4.3–5.0 mM 1 s 1; 9–11). The albumin-mediated relaxation enhancement may result in advantages for Gd-BOPTA for contrastenhanced breast MRI, allowing a higher degree of enhancement at the same dose. Presented herein are the results of a study aimed at evaluating the accuracy of GdBOPTA for breast lesion characterization. Gd-BOPTA doses of 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2 mmol/kg were compared to a Gd-DTPA dose of 0.1 mmol/kg in a fully blinded and randomized manner. MATERIALS AND METHODS" @default.
