- W2078661835 abstract "Pornography as a possible contributary factor towards violence against women. Although pornography has existed throughout the ages it was not until the second half of this century that research concerning the possible effects it may have on behaviour and the male–female relationship became the focus of attention. The realization that this is an area that has been seriously neglected by researchers is mainly due to the lobbying of feminists who raised objections to the way in which women are portrayed in pornography and their belief that pornography, in addition to humiliating women and denying them human rights, contributes towards males showing violent behaviour towards women. On the basis of the research done to date it is not possible to say whether exposure to pornography can affect behaviour negatively and cause violence towards women. The research findings are contradictory and most of the studies can be criticized on methodological grounds. Even the theoretical models used to explain the effect of pornography on behaviour are based on contradictory assumptions. On the basis of the available scientific knowledge about pornography it can be said that the research is still in its infancy and that it is essential that more research be undertaken. As pornography is illegal in South Africa, research is especially necessary in order to be able to advise the authorities about the possible effects its legalization could have." @default.
