- W2078696044 abstract "1. Some species of echinoderms tolerate habitats of reduced, enhanced or fluctuating salinities. 2. The body fluids of echinoderms are ionically and osmotically similar to that of the surrounding medium with the exception that K+ is accumulated both in the ambulacral fluid of asteroids and echinoids, and in the coelomic fluid of ophiuroids. 3. The ionic levels of the body fluids equilibrate with altered external salinities in 12–24hr. 4. The intracellular fluids have enhanced amino acid and K+ concentrations, but reduced Na+ and Cl− concentrations, with respect to both body fluids and the external medium. 5. In altered salinities, cell volume and isosmotic intracellular regulation is effected first by mobilization of Na+ and Cl− followed by amino acids; intracellular K+ and Ca2+ levels are conserved. 6. Intracellular osmoregulation results in an altered intracellular ionic environment which may have an effect on membrane potentials and enzyme activities." @default.
