- W2078699428 abstract "Section Editors Karin Reuter-Rice, PhD, CPNP-AC, FCCM Corresponding Editor Duke University Durham, North Carolina Terea Giannetta, MSN, RN, CPNP California State University, Fresno Fresno, California Lisa Milonovich, RN, MSN, PCCNP Children's Medical Center Dallas Dallas, Texas Herpes simplex virus (HSV) encephalitis is the most common form of sporadic viral encephalitis. This form of encephalitis is thought to be the result of reactivation of latent infection with virus located in the cranial nerve ganglia or the result of central nervous system (CNS) invasion through olfactory pathways. It can manifest at any time during the year, in patients of all ages, and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality ( Aldea et al., 2003 Aldea S. Joly L.M. Roujeau T. Oswald A.M. The occurrence of HSV encephalitis after neurosurgery is rare and only a small number of cases have been reported in the literature. This article discusses a case encountered in the pediatric intensive care unit and implications for recognition and treatment for neurosurgical procedures.
