- W2078751621 abstract "Aerial fallout around a nickel smelter in the Niagara Peninsula over the past 60 years resulted in accumulations of between 500 and 1500 mg/kg Ni in mineral soils within a 3 km quadrant; to the NE-SE direction. Normal background levels are 16 ± 16 mg/kg. An organic soil 1 km away from the refinery, where vegetables were produced, had become contaminated and production difficulties have been experienced for at least two decades. A property on the organic soils east of the smelter was selected for investigation of the problem. Composite sampling of the property revealed Ni residues ranging from 600 to 6455 mg/kg. The area was planted to beets, cabbage, celery, lettuce and radish. After becoming established, plants developed general symptoms of injury including stunted roots and tops, chlorosis, necrosis and discolored roots. Specific symptoms that were observed on some crops involved twisting of stalks and midrib, thickening of leaf tissues and failure of leaves to fold to form compact heads. Yields of all crops were drastically reduced by all levels of Ni; no radish or cabbage was suitable for marketing. Celery, lettuce and beets were reduced from a normal yield of lettuce on soil with 1300 mg/kg Ni to no marketable crops on soils with 4800 mg/kg. Plants from microplots across the planted strips were analysed and Ni was found to be accumulated in dried plant tissues up to 400 mg/kg in cabbage heads and celery tops. Copper and cobalt fallout was also found on this property. However, levels of copper, other than a small section where levels ranged from 500 to 800 mg/kg, were at or below 400 mg/kg; a level not unusual in organic soils in Canada and not associated with crop damage. Cobalt levels ranged from 10 to 70 mg/kg and were not considered to have any toxic effects on vegetable production." @default.
