However, it is unclear whether the lower rates reflect the epidemiologic paradox of surprisingly good health for Hispanics or significant problems with underdiagnosis for this population. The present study uses the 2003 National Survey of Children's Health to compare the prevalence of diagnosed conditions of autism, ADHD, developmental delays, learning disabilities, and depression/anxiety for white and Hispanic children. It also examines parental concern with development and the discrepancy between parental concern and diagnosis for whites and Hispanics. Results reveal that Hispanic children are less likely than white children to have been diagnosed with autism, ADHD, developmental delays, and/or depression/anxiety. However, it reveals that parental concern with development is actually greater for Hispanic than for white parents. These findings cast doubt on assertions that Hispanic children are in surprisingly good health (epidemiologic paradox). Rather they suggest that the lower rates of diagnosed conditions may be due, in part, to underdiagnosis. Further, results identify the important and complex relationship between culture/language and underdiagnosis and call for more detailed investigations of these issues." @default.
